
Getting Your Industrial Ovens Right with Carbon Fiber IR Lamps
Most standard metal coils just can’t hit the thermal targets some of you need. That’s why we build carbon fiber heating lamps. Instead of relying on nichrome wire, we use carbon fiber filaments. They run at lower temperatures but pump out high-intensity short-wave infrared radiation. The real win here? You’re heating the actual workpiece, not just wasting a ton of power heating up the air inside the oven. The nitty-gritty on power and voltage When you’re picking a lamp, look at the wattage-to-length ratio. That’s what controls your heat flux. If you cram high wattage into a short tube, you get intense heat density. If you’ve got a high-voltage setup, your current draw drops, which means your wiring stays cooler. But here’s the catch: high-density lamps are demanding. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, you’re basically throwing energy away—it hits the oven walls instead of your part. Keep those reflectors clean. The build and the connections We wrap the carbon filament in a quartz envelope to keep it from oxidizing. Depending on what you’re doing, we can add coatings to shift the emission spectrum or stop chemical splashes from ruining the glass. You’ll usually find these using R7s or Sk15 connectors. They aren’t just there to make plugging them in easier. They create a tight mechanical fit. When your machinery starts vibrating during a run, you don’t want your terminals arcing. The trade-offs you should know about These lamps are fast. Like, almost instant. You’ll spend way less time waiting for things to warm up, and you get much tighter control over your heating zones. But they aren’t indestructible. Carbon filaments are more brittle than metal. If your oven frame shifts or the lamp takes a hard knock, the filament can snap. To keep them alive, make sure your mounting brackets are rock solid. Also, take a look at your PID controllers. If they’re tuned too aggressively, that constant power cycling can put too much stress on the quartz. Keep it smooth, and they’ll last.
