
Getting the Most Out of the 500mm 700W Carbon Infrared Heater
If you’ve ever dealt with halogen tubes, you know the struggle. They’re aggressive. One minute everything is fine, and the next, you’ve scorched the surface of your workpiece. That’s exactly why we went with carbon filaments for these 500mm units. We wanted something that sits right in the middle—stronger than long-wave, but not as “angry” as short-wave. The heat feels different. At 700W over a half-meter, you aren’t hitting the material with a sudden, violent spike of energy. It’s more of a steady soak. This is huge because it stops those annoying “hot spots” from ruining your project. Just a heads up: don’t try to crank the wattage higher in this size. Unless your airflow is absolutely perfect, you’ll just burn out the filament. Keep it where it belongs. Why carbon? Here’s the thing about carbon. It doesn’t get as blisteringly hot as quartz, but it pushes energy deeper into plastics and coatings. It takes a second longer to get going—you won’t get that instant “snap” you see with short-wave lamps—but the cure is way more uniform. Plus, carbon is tougher. It handles the constant on-off cycling of a busy shift without cracking under the pressure. It just lasts. Setting it up (and a few warnings) These are designed to slide right into your standard 500mm industrial housings. Simple. Just pair them with a PID controller so you can actually dial in your temps. But be careful with your power. Carbon lamps have a specific way they handle resistance. If your power supply isn’t regulated and you hit a voltage spike? Your element is toast. And please, keep your reflectors clean. It sounds basic, but a layer of dust kills your efficiency. You’ll end up forcing the lamp to run way hotter just to hit your target temp, which isn’t a great way to do business.
