Let’s Talk About Our 1200W Carbon Fiber IR Heaters

We build these lamps using a carbon fiber filament tucked inside a high-purity quartz tube. Most people are used to standard nichrome wire, but carbon fiber is a different beast. It doesn’t need to get nearly as hot to put out the same amount of radiant heat. That shift in temperature changes how the heat actually sinks into your materials, which is a huge win depending on what you’re trying to dry or cure.

Handling the Heat

Packing 1200W into a small quartz tube creates a lot of concentrated energy. It’s intense. Before you install these, take a good look at your mounting brackets and wiring. They need to be up for the task. We designed these for speed—they ramp up almost instantly because the quartz lets the IR radiation fly straight through to your workpiece. If you’re dropping these into an old machine, double-check your power supply. You need stable voltage here. If the power fluctuates, you’re just asking for the filament to burn out early.

Why Carbon and Quartz?

The carbon fiber core does all the heavy lifting. It handles the stress of expanding and contracting much better than metal coils do. Then there’s the quartz. We use it because it stays straight and true even when things get scorching, and it doesn’t “steal” the energy by absorbing the IR waves. And since we make these ourselves, we can tweak them. Need a different length? Want a different filament density to hit a specific temperature? Just let us know.

The Trade-offs

These are great drop-in replacements for industrial drying lines, and they’ll react way faster than a ceramic heater. But here’s the catch:quartz is brittle. If your equipment shakes or takes a lot of mechanical hits, you’ve got to use dampened supports. If you don’t, the tube will crack. Period. I also highly recommend using a PID controller. Because these heat up so fast, it’s easy to overshoot your target and scorch your work if your timing is off. A little bit of precision goes a long way here.
